Vector Import in Cinema 4D allows artists to bring in vector artwork from external programs like Adobe Illustrator and convert it into editable 3D geometry. This workflow is essential for turning 2D designs, logos, and illustrations into fully manipulable 3D objects.

What It Is

  • Imports vector paths and shapes from Illustrator (.ai) files.
  • Converts vector outlines into spline objects that can be edited or used as generators.
  • Supports import of fills, strokes, and compound paths for complex designs.
  • Maintains clean and scalable vector data for precise 3D modeling.

How It Works

  1. Export your vector artwork from Illustrator in a compatible format (AI or SVG).
  2. In Cinema 4D, use the File > Open or Merge command to import the vector file (or just drag in you vector file).
  3. The vectors load as spline objects grouped in a null.
  4. Edit the splines directly or use generators like Extrude, Lathe, or Sweep to create 3D forms.
  5. Adjust import settings in Preferences to control scale, grouping, and spline types.
  6. Refine your imported vectors by cleaning splines or adding modifiers as needed.

Use Cases

  • Turning logos and 2D graphics into 3D models.
  • Creating detailed typography and custom lettering in 3D.
  • Importing technical drawings or schematics for visualization.
  • Building complex shapes quickly by leveraging existing vector art.

Benefits

  • Speeds up modeling by reusing existing 2D artwork.
  • Keeps designs scalable and precise with vector-based input.
  • Seamlessly integrates 2D and 3D workflows.
  • Non-destructive: imported splines can be edited anytime.
