Connectors

Cinema 4D

2 January 2023

The Connector object in Cinema 4D is used to constrain two dynamic objects together using physical behaviors like hinges, springs, or fixed joints. It's essential for building articulated mechanisms, ragdolls, or linked assemblies that interact realistically using the Simulation System.

What It Is

  • Simulation Constraint: Binds two dynamic objects with physical rules.
  • Connector Types: Includes Fixed, Hinge, Spring, RagDoll, Cardan, and Piston types.
  • Works in Simulation System: Only affects objects with Simulation tags and appropriate settings.
  • Position & Rotation Based: Connects objects via their relative transform positions.
  • Visual Debugging: Connector object displays axis and handles to visualize the constraint in the viewport.

How It Works

  1. Create Dynamic Objects: Apply Simulation tags (Rigid Body or Soft Body) to the objects you want to connect.
  2. Add a Connector: Insert a Connector object into the scene from the Simulate menu.
  3. Set Connection Type: In the Object tab, choose from Fixed, Hinge, Spring, or other types depending on desired behavior.
  4. Assign A and B Objects: Drag your dynamic objects into the Connector’s A and B object fields.
  5. Adjust Position and Rotation: Move and rotate the Connector to set its constraint direction and pivot points.

Use Cases

  • Mechanical Assemblies: Simulate moving parts like levers, pistons, gears, and rotating arms.
  • Ragdoll Rigs: Create physically interactive characters with joints and limbs.
  • Chains and Ropes: Link objects with hinges or springs for realistic flexible movement.
  • Physics Experiments: Test interactions between connected objects with mass, friction, and force settings.

Benefits

  • Enables realistic interaction between connected objects
  • Supports a variety of joint types for different simulation needs
  • Non-destructive and fully controllable via attributes
  • Integrates seamlessly with Cinema 4D’s Simulation System
