Symmetry
Cinema 4D
2 January 2023
Symmetry in Cinema 4D is a powerful generator that automatically mirrors your geometry across a chosen axis, enabling efficient and precise modeling of symmetrical objects. It helps artists save time and maintain perfect balance in their models.
What It Is
- Creates a mirrored copy of an object along a specified axis (X, Y, or Z).
- Works non-destructively as a generator, keeping the original mesh editable.
- Automatically updates the mirrored side as you edit the original geometry.
- Includes options to control the mirror plane, merge distance, and axis orientation.
How It Works
- Select the object you want to mirror.
- Add a Symmetry generator from the Create > Generators menu.
- Make your object a child of the Symmetry generator.
- Adjust the Mirror Axis parameter to choose the axis of symmetry (X, Y, or Z).
- Set the Merge Distance to control how closely vertices merge across the seam.
- Edit your original object; the mirrored half updates in real-time.
Use Cases
- Modeling characters or creatures with symmetrical features.
- Creating architectural elements like doors, windows, and furniture.
- Speeding up workflows by only modeling one half of an object.
- Ensuring perfect balance and alignment in mechanical or product designs.
Benefits
- Saves modeling time by reducing repetitive work.
- Maintains precise symmetry throughout the modeling process.
- Non-destructive workflow allows easy adjustments.
- Integrates seamlessly with other modeling and deformation tools.
