Part of Cinema 4D Essentials
Splines
Cinema 4D
2 January 2023
Splines in Cinema 4D are foundational curve-based objects used for creating paths, outlines, or frameworks for modeling, animation, and more. They can be drawn freehand or generated procedurally, and are essential for operations like extruding, sweeping, or lofting geometry.
What It Is
- Editable curve-based objects used to define shapes and paths.
- Includes types like Bezier, B-Spline, Linear, and Akima splines.
- Can be open or closed shapes, 2D or 3D.
- Used in modeling, animation paths, motion graphics, and rigging.
How It Works
- Create a spline from the Create → Spline menu or draw one using the Spline Pen.
- Edit spline points in point, segment, or tangent mode.
- Adjust interpolation and point types (e.g. soft, hard, bezier) for curve control.
- Combine with generators like Extrude, Sweep, or Loft to create 3D geometry.
- Use spline deformers or animate along paths using Align to Spline tag.
Use Cases
- Logo and text shaping for motion graphics.
- Architectural profiles and trim modeling.
- Path animation for cameras or objects.
- Base structure for extruded or swept geometry.
Benefits
- Precise control over shapes with intuitive point editing.
- Lightweight and flexible objects that integrate well with generators.
- Non-destructive workflows when used with parametric tools.
- Essential for combining design and animation workflows.
