Extrude in Cinema 4D is a generator object that adds depth to 2D shapes like splines by extending them along the Z-axis, creating 3D geometry from flat outlines. It’s a fundamental tool for modeling, typography, and creating complex shapes from basic curves.

What It Is

  • The Extrude object transforms 2D splines into 3D models by adding thickness.
  • It supports caps and subdivisions for smooth surfaces and detailed geometry.
  • Works with all spline types including closed, open, and editable splines.
  • Allows customizable depth, bevel, and subdivision controls for versatile results.

How It Works

  1. Create or select a spline object to extrude (e.g., text spline, circle, custom shape).
  2. Add an Extrude object from the Generators menu.
  3. Make the spline a child of the Extrude object in the Object Manager.
  4. Adjust the Extrude depth and offset to define thickness and extrusion direction.
  5. Customize caps, fillet, and subdivision settings to refine the edges and surface smoothness.
  6. Use deformation tools or materials to further modify the extruded shape if needed.

Use Cases

  • Creating 3D text and logos from spline outlines.
  • Building architectural elements from floor plans or 2D drawings.
  • Generating extruded shapes for product design and prototyping.
  • Adding thickness to graphic elements for motion graphics or illustration.

Benefits

  • Transforms simple 2D shapes into versatile 3D geometry quickly.
  • Non-destructive and editable, allowing changes to the original spline or extrusion parameters.
  • Supports detailed edge control through caps and bevels.
  • Integrates smoothly with animation and deformation workflows.
