Dynamic Inflating Balloons in Cinema 4D – Using dynamics we’ll create a cluster of simulated balloons in Cinema 4D – C4D Tutorial and project file.

This tutorial was requested by Peter (one of our awesome Lifetime Members) who wanted to recreate something similar to the effects here created by Reframe Studio in Korea for Olive Young.

Here’s how to set it up:

Step 1: Create the Balloon

  1. Add a Sphere to the scene.
  2. Change the Type from Standard to Hexahedron for even quad-based geometry.
  3. Increase the Segments to allow for smoother deformation.
  4. Apply a Squash & Stretch Deformer and increase the Factor to elongate the shape.
  5. Add a Taper Deformer to make one end pointier.
  6. Hide the deformers to declutter the viewport.

Step 2: Clone the Balloons

  1. Place the Sphere inside a Cloner Object.
  2. Set up a 3 x 3 x 3 grid of balloons.

Step 3: Add Random Rotation & Scale

  1. Add a Random Effector, rename it Random Rotation.
  2. Under Parameter Tab, disable Position and enable Rotation.
  3. Enter random values to add variation.
  4. Add another Random Effector, rename it Random Scale.
  5. Disable Position and enable Scale, set Uniform Scale to -1.

Step 4: Animate Balloon Inflation

  1. In the Random Scale Effector, go to Effector Tab.
  2. Change Random Mode to Noise or Turbulence for animation.
  3. Lower the Animation Speed to 60%.
  4. Extend the timeline if needed.

Step 5: Make the Balloons Dynamic

  1. Add a Cloth Tag to the Cloner.
  2. Press Ctrl + D to open Project Settings.
  3. Under Simulation > Scene, set Gravity to 0.
  4. Increase the grid size slightly to prevent initial intersections.

Step 6: Add Attraction Force

  1. Add an Attractor Force to pull balloons to the center.

  2. Increase Strength to 20000.

  3. To prevent objects from collapsing into one point:

    • Go to Attractor > Fields, add a Spherical Field.
    • Scale it up and invert it under Remapping.

Step 7: Maintain Balloon Shape

  1. In the Cloth Tag, under Balloon, set Overpressure to 1.1 to inflate balloons.
  2. Enable Follow Shape under the Mix Animation Tab to restore scaling animation.

Step 8: Fix Collisions & Improve Realism

  1. In the Cloth Tag > Surface Tab, increase Thickness to 5cm.
  2. Reduce Mass to 0.1 for a lighter balloon effect.
  3. Increase Collision Passes and Iterations in Scene Simulation Settings to improve collision accuracy.
  4. If balloons float away, increase Attractor Strength.

Step 9: Fine-Tuning

  1. Adjust Cloth Settings to control stretchiness or softness.
  2. Modify Soft Body Settings if needed.
  3. Increase Substeps, Iterations, and Smoothing Iterations in Simulation Settings to reduce unwanted jiggle.
  4. Adjust Damping to reduce excessive motion.
