Inflating Abstract Objects in Cinema 4D – Using dynamics we’ll inflate and deflate abstract shapes Cinema 4D – C4D Tutorial and project file.

Fully animated and includes all models, textures, materials, lighting, and Redshift Renderer settings using and ACES workflow for better color. See our ACES guide here.

This tutorial was requested by Peter (one of our awesome Lifetime Members) who wanted to recreate something similar to the effects here created by Reframe Studio in Korea for Olive Young.

Step-By-Step Walkthrough

Create the Base Shape

  • Add a Capsule, scale it down.

  • Duplicate and arrange additional appendages.

  • Ensure symmetry before remeshing.

Convert to a Single Mesh

  • Use Volume Builder (reduce voxel size).

  • Add Volume Mesher (adjust adaptive mesh).

  • Apply Remesh (set polygon count to 3000).

  • Convert to a Polygon Object (Connect Objects + Delete).

Set Up Cloner & Randomization

  • Add Cloner (set Mode: Radial, Plane: XY, adjust Radius).

  • Apply Random Effector (enable Rotation randomization).

Add Cloth Simulation

  • Apply Cloth Tag to the Cloner.

  • Disable Gravity (CTRL + DScene SettingsGravity: 0).

Use Field Force for Attraction

  • Add Field Force (does nothing by default).

  • Insert a Spherical Field (adjust Direction to No Remap).

  • Reverse force direction (negative Strength).

Improve Cloth Behavior

  • Increase Mass in Cloth settings.

  • Enable Mass Consideration in Field Force.

  • Adjust Bendiness and enable Soft Body constraints.

Enable Inflation (Balloon Tab)

  • Set Overpressure to 1 (inflate).

  • Increase Pressure to 1.4 for stability.

Adjust Force Strength & Substeps

  • Increase Field Force Strength (-20).

  • Increase Substeps to smooth simulation.

Animate Deflation & Inflation

  • Frame 50: Keyframe Overpressure → Deflate to 0.4.

  • Frame 80: Inflate rapidly to Pressure: 6.

Refine Collisions & Expansion

  • Increase Collision Passes & Iterations to fix intersections.

  • Adjust Field Force Strength dynamically:

    • Frame 80: Reduce Strength to 0.

    • Frame 150: Restore Field Force Strength.

Final Refinements

  • Adjust final deflation timing for smoother transition.

  • Increase Smoothing Iterations to reduce jiggling.

Render the Final Animation

  • Fire off a quick render.

  • Make final tweaks and export the result.
